For those of you who are new to reading my blog, I am a room mom for my daughter's class at school. I am in charge of certain activities and I assign tasks and times to parents who sign up for said activities.
Every so often, the parents of a specific grade will show their appreciation to the hard-working teachers by preparing food items for breakfast and lunch. We call it "Wonderful Wednesday", and the preparation behind it consists of a lot more than just parents making food - it's the set-up, the presentation and the clean-up as well. To sum it up, it doesn't matter what one does to support such a day, everyone who helps out in some capacity is appreciated for their effort.
With just three weeks remaining in the school year, this Wednesday is the last Wonderful Wednesday and it wasn't until last week that I found out that there were three other grades besides ours that were participating in this end-of-the-year activity. When it came to our class, there was little left to be done so we were given the jobs of decorating, receiving the food and cleaning up at the end of the day. Fine. No big deal. Who the fuck cares?! Oh that's right...one of the parents in my class cares, that's who!
This morning I contacted the parents who had signed up for this activity and I did what I always do - explained what we were doing and told them when they needed to be there. I asked them if they couldn't be there to please contact me so when I received an Email this evening from one of the parents, I certainly wasn't expecting a long-winded complaint. (my comments are in blue)
"I always prepare food for what ever grades my kids are in and I sign up for every one of them." she said to me. Cool. Since you're such a role model to all parents everywhere, please allow me to throw you a ticker-tape parade because you must be the ultimate parent and the rest of us peasants should be honored to lick your boot straps because you're. just. that. special.
"I didn't know that I would be assigned to come to the school. I cannot be there at the time you slated for me.....Usually this is the job of the people in charge of Wonderful Wednesday, not a random parent." Is that so?????? Well then I guess as someone who's in charge of the event, I can honestly say that you're wrong, YOU BITCH!!!!
Here was my first response to this woman's Email correspondence:
E., I understand what you're saying but it is not always the case that someone is asked to bring food. Some people are asked to bring drinks, ice or even paper goods, just as some examples.
I'm sorry you're not pleased with the arrangements that were given to us. I was not in charge of this, I had no say in it and up until last week, I was completely unaware that the 2nd grade had to share this particular WW with three other grades.
As for what you signed up for, you signed a basic list. There was nothing on it as to specifics of what you would bring/make for either this WW or the one we participated in during the holidays. It just so happened, that the WW during the holidays was solely a second grade event and that's why you prepared a food item.
When we do this sort of thing, we have to take the good with the bad. We don't always get what we want. It's not about what we make but simply contributing and showing our appreciation to the teachers who deserve it.
Thanks for your response. I will not expect you to be there.
Her response:
I do appreciate you getting aback to me. I have to tell you I am l a little offended by your email. You're offended by my Email???? There must be a joke in there somewhere! I am well aware of being a team player. Apparently not since team players don't usually complain for having to do something they don't want to do. I do feel like I participate and help out as much as possible (probably more then most!) I have been preparing food for Wonderful Wednesday for both of my children for 5 years now. I am well aware that there may be other jobs that need to be done, but I was under the assumption that the people in charge of the event planned the putting out of food and disposal of food. Then perhaps you shouldn't make the mistake of incorrectly assuming things, whaddya' think??!
I think that to assign us times to be at the school to put out some trays or to clean up when you are going to be there anyway is a little over kill. Really? Well then I'd say it's pretty obvious that you've never been a room mom since part of a room mom's job is to be there to help support the parents during an activity, regardless of what the activity may be, you FUCKNUT. That is just my opinion. You're right, it is just your opinion, because as far as I can see, you're also the only one complaining so that means your opinion must mean jack. Like I said before, if they are in need of any refreshments, drinks, ice or paper products, I am more then happy to supply them. No, with one days notice, I cannot cancel my appointment and will miss the allotted time. Technically, it's two days notice but that's fine, I wouldn't want an adult acting like a spoiled brat who doesn't know how many days are in a week to be forced to do anything she doesn't want to do.
My last and final response:
As you found my Email offensive, I found yours equally as offensive and abrasive especially since all I'm doing is my job. If you feel things can be done in a better way then please, by all means, make suggestions, even volunteer to be a room mom, but please don't criticize me because you're not pleased with an end result that I have no control over.
I'm truly sorry you're disappointed and I'm glad you're voicing your opinion but as I already explained, this was out of my hands. I've been participating in Wonderful Wednesdays longer than you and as far as I've ever seen, it has always been a parents' responsibility to set up and take down, not those of us who are in charge of the event as you assumed. I'm going to be there on Wednesday simply because it's always been my preference to attend an event/activity to help out in any capacity that I can. With regards to WW, some room moms help out with set up and clean up and some dole out such responsibilities to the parents who've signed up and the room moms don't offer their assistance at all. Just because we're the room moms doesn't mean we have to be present for every activity. That's why the parents are there, to help us make sure the activity is a success.
There was no mention in your last message to me that you had an appointment and I certainly don't want or expect anyone to give up their scheduled appointments. I'm not sure I see the problem in assigning times. As a room mom, I have to take care of informing those who signed up what their responsibilities are and what times they are needed. I especially took you into consideration when asking you to be there in the morning because I remembered what times you're usually able to participate due to your youngest's school schedule. Receiving the food is just as important a part in such an event as making a food item. I'm not sure why you seem to be so offended by being asked to participate in a role that you're not accustomed to. The teachers appreciate everyone's participation, not just those who prepare the food.
Again, I've stated what I can. No hard feelings but if you're not satisfied with my response then I can only suggest you contact A. J..
Thank you.
I ask you people, who the FUCK needs this shit??? If I were getting paid to deal with peoples' issues that would be one thing, but I'm not and my job requirement certainly does not entail my having to deal with someone complaining about having to do one job when she'd prefer to do another. Up until last week, I had no idea that so many grades were participating in this particular activity. If I had been asked what our class would like to contribute, I would have said "PLEASE...let our class make some lunch dishes for if thou wilt not, I will be forced to deal with women getting ready to go on the rag because they cannot get their way."
Folks, in a little over a month I will be turning 40. I don't know how old this woman is but apparently it's not beneath her to stomp her feet and whine like a fucking two-year old.
And while I'm on the subject of being a room mom, I might as well make this post a little longer by telling you that my wonderful room mom who at the beginning of the school year told me that she refused to work with me because she's a control-freak asswipe, showed up at the pool in my subdivision tonight with her sons as they are going to be on the swim team along with my daughter. So it would seem that I'm gonna' be seeing a lot more of her than any one person should be forced to.
Someone, please, shoot me now.
